Frequently asked questions

What does 755 mean?

The owner can read, write and execute (7 = 4 + 2 + 1); the group and others can read and execute (5 = 4 + 1). It is common for folders and scripts.

Which permissions should a website use?

Usually 644 for files and 755 for folders. Avoid 777, which lets anyone on the server change the files.

What is the fourth digit?

An optional leading digit sets the special bits: 4 for setuid, 2 for setgid and 1 for the sticky bit, e.g. 1777 for /tmp.
